Reds fans were under no illusions that this game was vital if Liverpool were to salvage anything from another disappointing season.
The hungry roar from The Kop at the start let their team know that nothing less than a win would suffice.
But Blackburn's stubborn defence once again proved too strong to be broken down.
Trailing bitter neighbours Everton by eight points heading into the match, Liverpool needed a win before inviting them across Stanley Park for a kickabout on Sunday.
Rafa Benitez had tried to take the pressure off his squad before the game with some unusual training methods. He revealed that he had them playing basketball in training to help them relax after the intensity of the Champions League.
The quick touches needed in basketball clearly paid off as Liverpool took control of the game with some fluid, early build-up play from Steven Gerard and Vladimir Smicer as they created chances for the new striking partnership of Milan Baros and Fernando Morientes.
Blackburn are starting to show more substance under Mark Hughes' leadership and have clearly gained confidence through their valiant exploits in the FA Cup.
But Liverpool had them on their heels from the outset and constantly threatened to score with Luis Garcia linking up well with Morientes, but Blackburn's solid back four refused to surrender an easy goal.
The home side could have been three or four goals ahead at the break but lacked the killer instinct needed to convert their well-crafted moves.
The only bright spark for Rovers was Jonathan Stead who has raised his game since scoring at Everton and always chased loose balls, but just didn't get the delivery he craved from his team-mates.
John Arne Riise entered the fray to replace an injured Smicer after the half-time break and immediately helped Liverpool turn the tempo up another notch.
The Norwegian powerhouse danced through three blue and white shirts down the wing before linking up with Gerrard.
And he nearly put Liverpool ahead on 48 minutes after a determined run down the right flank and a deft cross, direct to a wide-open Morientes just inside the area, but the Spaniard sliced the ball into the crowd much to the Anfield faithful's dismay.
Blackburn countered Morientes' spooned effort by creating their first real chance, with Steven Reid finding Stead on the edge of the box, but his shot drifted wide.
And Blackburn came close to winning the game with another stealth goal on 78 minutes when they won a free-kick five yards outside the box, but Reid's low drive again missed the mark.
But despite all Liverpool's efforts to push the ball forward the game slipped towards a stalemate, leaving them with everything to do in the upcoming derby, which promises to have even more intensity and fireworks than usual.
