Both teams needed the points from this match to stave off the threat of relegation but it was Blackburn that finished up looking more like relegation fodder than David O'Leary's men.

Villa sub Darius Vassell went close on 73 minutes when Brad Friedel somehow kept out his three-yard effort out but from a similar area the keeper was beaten less than 60 seconds later.
J Lloyd Samuel burst down the left and delivered a fast low cross to the near post and the in-form Angel nipped in front of his marker to tap beyond Friedel.
Rovers meekly accepted the result without so much as threatening the imperious Olof Mellberg and Dion Dublin at the back. On this evidence, it is going to be a long, hard winter for the Lancashire outfit but Villa are on the up.
