The Spanish striker, who had to have nine stitches to the head wound sustained at Leicester on Saturday, gave a typically whole-hearted performance last night despite the injury, and earned his reward by heading home Damien Duff's 31st-minute cross to put Rovers two goals in front against Southampton.
Souness said: "I was very pleased for him. You saw from the celebrations how popular he is with the rest of the lads.
"He had a nasty gash on his temple, which can be a dangerous one, but he was determined to play."
The goal was well timed for the Real Zaragoza hitman as Andy Cole returns from suspension when Rovers entertain Chelsea a week tomorrow.
