Steve Kean is still desperate to boost his attacking options, but trying to get a player who has been aiming for the top to leave it all behind and come back to the championship is a bit far fetched.
Kean lost summer signing Leon Best to a long-term cruciate knee ligament injury and his replacement Colin Kazim-Richards also picked up an injury last Wednesday, now Kean has to act fast.
That has resulted in reports suggesting that Kean will make an ambitious bid to sign 30-year-old Lambert, who fired the Saints to automatic promotion last term when he bagged 27 Championship goals to take the Golden Boot.
