The midfielder’s current deal runs out next summer but he’s so keen to stay that he’ll readily sign a new one.
The 32-year-old has told Turkey boss Senol Gunes that he’ll give up playing for his country, who placed third in this summer’s world cup.
The former Rangers man played in the 5-0 thrashing of Liechtenstein and earned his 80th cap, which equalled Hakan Sukur’s record.
Back home, Graeme Souness welcomed the news.
“A new deal is all agreed in principle and Tugay and his agent will be meeting chief executive John Williams next week to formally sign everything,” said the Scot.
“And Tugay’s decision to retire from international football can only be good news for us.
“He’s 32 now and at that stage in your career all the travelling and the extra games international football entails obviously start to take a toll on your body.”
