Sven Goran Eriksson was at Ewood to watch Rovers beat Leeds, and although his main focus of attention would have been Alan Smith, who missed a penalty, Jonathan Woodgate and David Dunn, he can’t have missed a sterling performance from the new boy.
Thompson has played just four times for Rovers since signing from Coventry recently, but two goals and some dazzling performances have made him a favourite already.
“I have worked with him over the last two-and-a-half weeks and I think he should be in the England team,” Souey said.
“He should have played in the national team by now. He can punch his weight, sees the bigger picture and takes a great free-kick.
“There is no doubt he could do a job for Sven and England. He is easily good enough and long-term I see him in that central midfield role.
“I don’t know why he has not been in the national team already.”
