Consecutive defeats had plunged Rovers back into the bottom three of the Premiership, but the manner of their victory over Southampton bodes well for the side.
"Psychologically it was a big three points for us," said Souness. "It’s a big win and it gets us back out of the bottom three.
"We have Chelsea at home next, which won’t be easy, but this should give us confidence, as it is winning one of our games in hand on the rest of the teams around us."
Souness believes the key to the struggle is concentrating on how his players are performing rather than analysing Blackburn’s rivals in detail.
He added: "The temptation is to drive yourself crazy by studying the remaining fixtures for all the teams around you but the best advice is to simply concentrate on your own situation.
"We know what we need to do to ensure Premiership survival and we are united in believing we have the skill and strength to come through this test."
