So what about the Worthington Cup? Surely Souey wants to hold onto that title for another year, no?
"When I was a player in Italy in the eighties, the championship was the only thing that mattered," said Souness. "And that's how the game has evolved in other countries, including England. The championship trophy is the most important piece of silverware.
"But I would never play down the Worthington Cup. It has been kind to us and to our supporters and we owe the competition a lot. We are in Europe because of the Worthington Cup and we had a great day out in Cardiff. We will be having a real go to try to win it again."
Phew. We thought he'd lost interest in that little sideline for a moment there! He continued:
"We've had a demanding couple of weeks, though, and there are some hard games to come. So we will be resting one or two players against Walsall. I'm sure our supporters will understand why.
"But even though we won't be fielding our strongest line-up, we have people who haven't been in the team on a regular basis who feel they ought to be in the side. This is an opportunity for them to show me that they should be playing regularly."
