The Rovers midfielder completed 70 minutes for the reserves in their game against Middlesbrough earlier this week and appears to have suffered no reaction on the groin injury that has seen him sidelined for the last six weeks.
"The next 48 hours are crucial for me but that was the best it's felt," Savage told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.
"I've been training outside now for 10 days so my fitness work has been good but playing a game is completely different.
"I just hope there's no reaction, then fingers crossed I'll be back."
