Rovers currently sit in 11th place, on the same points (42) as tenth placed Stoke City, although if they could have taken advantage at Portsmouth on Saturday, then Rovers would have been in the top half.

But failure to put away the chances in front of goal is Rovers’ main problem otherwise they could have been a few places higher up the table. And Allardyce knows this.

"The clean sheets are obviously the basis for any good season. The team that wins the league has the most clean sheets. It's not the one who scores the most goals," said the boss.

"That's always your first priority because with our deficiencies in front of goal, we find ourselves just below the top half.

"We've put a really exciting young side together, which is going to grow hopefully.

"Our only deficiency is goalscoring ability and we needed more - not just from the strikers but the team as a whole.

"Dunn is our leading scorer. But someone should have stepped up to the plate and scored more and if they had done that, we would have been comfortable in the top half.

"We've got to try to push on, but the season has been very satisfying in terms of progress made."
