Rovers' Chairman Paul Williams would not be drawn on Shearer's name but did say
"There will be no news today - what is in the public domain is we are having a meeting to consider the candidate list, which is a good list, healthy list, lots of very interesting applicants and we start work today and see where we go.
"It is never good to lose the manager but if there is going to be a time, this is the time as we are between seasons - I would hope that we will have something within a week to ten days."
Tony Parkes, whjo spent 34 years at Ewood Park believes Shearer deserves a chance.
Parkes told the Daily Express: "Alan will be a good manager - he just needs the chance to prove it.
"He is single-minded and has the utmost respect from players and managers throughout the game."
Parkes also believes Shearer will need to appoint an experienced number two should he be offered the manager's role.
"When Kenny Dalglish was manager, he did hardly any coaching; most of that was down to Ray Harford.
"Alan could do the same if he brought in an experienced number two who could help him out with the tactical side."
