Egil has spent most of his time battling it out for the reserves since his move from Southampton carried as much punch as the departing Kevin Davies.

But recent injuries to Matt Jansen, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Cicicio Grabbi and Damien Duff have seen the Norseman in the starting line-up at Ewood.

Viking director Bjarne Berntsen hasn’t let this put him off.

“I don’t believe that Blackburn are trying to show what he can do,” Berntsen said of Egil’s selection. “I believe it is because of Blackburn’s injury situation."

Viking plan to buy Ostenstad in January when the transfer window opens again, but if they fail they will look elsewhere.
