Goodwillie went to Crystal Palace until January on a loan, but he was unable to settle down south and his loan was cut short so he could return to his parent club.
However, under the terms of the deal that the two clubs struck, the only team that he can play for until the loan period ends is Crystal Palace.
Black told reporters: "David's come back. He's fully aware that he can't play. Unfortunately he didn't settle - that can be a combination of not playing regularly and whatever else.
"We've agreed between the clubs to bring him back so we've reintegrated him into training and hopefully in the next month or so, when the break comes, he'll be in a position to contribute.
"He can't go back out. He's back here, he'll train and we'll try and get one or two behind-closed-doors games for him. But he can't play officially."
