Jansen puts Cole amongst the best...

Cole is in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s ‘possibles’ tray as the England coach weighs up who should go to Japan.

Jansen claims Cole should be upgraded to the ‘definites’ after his strike earned Rovers their first Worthington Cup.

"He’s a quality player," said Jansen. "He’s been in squads before and I’ve no doubt he should be included in the squad come May.

"I don’t think Mr Eriksson was here, but I’m sure he will have watched the game and seen Andy’s goal.

"It’s brilliant for Andy and this was a medal he didn’t have.

"It was a great finish. He hit it early and the keeper couldn’t get there."

Cole refused to be drawn on his World Cup chances and claimed all he had been concerned about was winning the cup for Blackburn.

"That doesn’t have anything to do with today," he said. "This was about winning a cup for Blackburn and for our supporters, not about Andrew Cole trying to get into the World Cup squad."

Mark Hughes, who has become the first player to win the League Cup with three different clubs, hailed Cole as "world class".

He said: "Andy has been absolutely first class since he came to the club. He’s a genuine world-class player.

"It’s not just his influence on the side on the pitch, it’s also away from the Saturday game.

"He’s a winner, he’s used to winning and he tries to impart that on the other players."
