Van Heerden joins Rovers on a free transfer from Belgian side Club Brugge, where the 25 year old has been for the last three years.
Van Heerden, if he stays injury free, will be a handy acquisition for Rovers as he can play anywhere across the midfield.
He is currently training with the South African squad ahead of the Confederations Cup, but was given permission to leave the camp in order to sign his Rovers contract.
