Souness was linked with moves for players such as James Beattie and Benni McCarthy - the type of strikers that we could all see banging in the goals for the team in a bid to qualify yet again for another European adventure.
Paul Dickov? It's hardly a name that sets the pulse racing nor one that conjours up images of moments of sheer brilliance or late mazy runs into the box. Surely a player we could get for a meer £150k from a relegated Leicester City side is not the type of signing supporters want to see - especially one that is designed to replace a striker of the calibre of Andy Cole.
How wrong we were.
Dickov has been an inspiration to the Rovers players, fans and management alike. And while the pint-size Scot has failed in preventing Rovers' slip to the wrong end of the table, his performance and work-rate can be greatly admired.
He's got 9 Premiership goals to his name - not only that but his name lies ninth in the Premiership topgoalscorers list among the 'higher profile' entries such as Thierry Henry, Andy Johnson and Wayne Rooney.
His hard-tackling, never-ending, back-breaking, goal-poaching performances have made us all sit up and take notice of the little Scot signed from Leicester. His recent performance against Norwich City was a prime example. Two goals, and what would have been a man-of-the-match rating except for the fantastic performance of Morten Gamst Pedersen.
Dickov is now LOVED by the Rovers fans and hated by fans of most other clubs. Paul Dickov, Mark Hughes and Robbie Savage mean Blackburn Rovers will not get relegated from the Premiership.
