Stephen Ward secured a comeback victory for Wolverhampton Wanderers, making amends for an earlier Kevin Doyle penalty miss. The result ended the Midlands side's winless Premier League run, in six meetings, against Blackburn Rovers.
Doyle was thwarted from the spot, shortly after half-time with the score at 1-1, but seconds later Ward struck. Earlier Blackburn had led through new signing Mauro Formica's angled finish before Steven Fletcher levelled with a header.
Blackburn had looked potentially vulnerable on paper as they were depleted in central defence due to Ryan Nelsen's knee problem and Chris Samba's groin injury. That meant Grant Hanley started alongside Steven Nzonzi.
But it Wolves had the first defensive scare in only the fourth minute after Morten Gamst Pedersen's cross from the right wing picked out Junior Hoilett at the back post. The striker's finish, from just three yards, was clawed away by Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessy.
Jason Roberts' persistence soon provider of Blackburn's opening goal though. After bustling approach play against Wolves' defenders, he side-footed the ball forward to his left, from the edge of the area. Debutant Formica took advantage with a precise, angled finish - eight yards out - that Hennessy could not keep out.
