On Saturday he saw his inherited side go down 2-0 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park and he was left with plenty to ponder.
A double from Glenn Murray was enough to see off the visitors, although in fairness to Rovers they did hit the woodwork three times, but Palace were the better side on the day, having a lion's share of the possession.
Berg spoke to Sky Sports after the game saying: "It was neither the performance nor the result we would have liked.
"We had a bad performance and I think we can be much better than this. We played against a good team but we expect to be better than this defensively and offensively.
"It is a fresh start. I don't know everybody 100 per cent yet. I know those that have played lately better than the other ones. We have some injuries as well and quite a few players out and that's why maybe more people get a chance.
"It's a good squad we have here but there is room for a lot of improvement and we will do that. I have seen this team play much better than they did here so hopefully it is a one-off."
