It’s common knowledge that Rovers are short of attacking options after selling Roque Santa Cruz and Matt Derbyshire in the summer and Sam Allardyce has been on the lookout for a striker with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Peter Crouch among the names being banded about as possible targets.
Chelsea striker Franco di Santo is another player who has been linked with Rovers, but it seems that Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti wants to keep hold of the young Argentine.
Allardyce watched Zenit St Petersburg's Russian star Pavel Pogrebnyak in action at the weekend and he is the latest striker being linked with a move if Rovers can come up with the cash..
South African McCarthy to the Lancashire Telegraph:"We need extra and that little bit more quality to raise our game.
"I know my strength and Jason Roberts knows his strength and we know we really complement each other.
"Maybe the manager will pick me for some games because of what I have over Jason and in other games maybe he will pick Jason for what he has over me.
"We don't have that player that has the qualities of both of us. That is what we had with Roque.
"If we can get one more quality striker and if it means one of us [McCarthy or Roberts] has to sacrifice then we would rather that as long as we win games and keep ourselves in the top half of the league."
